Refuse!

Happy V-Day!! It's the month of love and there's no other excuse not to include our planet on your list of loved ones!! Let's continue with our 2019 Zero Waste Cleaner Slate plans.

If you've completed your trash audit last January you should have a good idea where most of your trash is coming from. For my family it was from taking out food or getting food delivered to our home.

So we've put in some effort in reducing the number of times we get take out or get something delivered. If it can't be avoided we request for less packaging. A burger doesn't have to come in a plastic bag with a butt load of tissue paper and three to four ketchup packets. If you don't need the extra stuff, give it back.

WE LOVE PIZZA! Who doesn't!? So you can just imagine the amount of pizza boxes we have at home. We upcycled ALL OF IT! Because we're doing the Konmari stuff at home I made boxes out of these pizza boxes (we kept them clean this entire time).

For the most part, we REFUSE single use plastic. It's difficult in the beginning. They're everywhere!!! What has helped me and my family is bringing a zero waste kit with us all the time. :)

I know what you're thinking."Yey! Shopping!" Before you do that you may want to go back to your trash audit list to see what is the easiest switch you can make. You might end up buying a metal or bamboo straw coz everyone is doing it only to realize you don't really use plastic straw to begin with.

Based on our trash audit list, we needed to reduce the packaging from getting food taken out - disposable plastic boxes, disposable utensils, disposable cups and plastic bags. So we put together our zero waste kit based on that. My hubby uses his lunch “box” and I have a canvas bag which has enough for me, my hubby and my son.

1. Insulated Bottle to replace plastic or plastic lined paper cup: get the ones that are good for hot and cold beverages so you don’t have to bring two. I got mine from R.O.X. It may seem pricey but my son has dropped this several times and it has zero dents or scratches.
2. Metal Utensils in a tin container. I got mine from Miniso for PHP200
3. Metal straws for the adults and silicone straw for the little boy. Check the Buhay Zero Waste group on FB if you need some.
4. Reusable napkin.
5. Lock and Lock container
6. Eco bag: useful whe we’re at the mall and we purchase something. There are still a lot of stores who use plastic bags.

I keep my zero waste kit with me all the time and the hubby brings his to work.

Having this kit makes it easier for us to refuse plastic. It will take some time for you to get used to bringing them all the time. It’ll become a habit eventually so just keep on keepin’ on.

Happy Zero Wasting!
