Review: Tooth Powder by Zero Basics

Image
Since I posted a picture of my newly purchased tooth powder some of my friends are asking how it’s working out for me. So here’s the skinny on that. Last month I went to The Good Trade PH Lawn Party with the intent to buy a new scrub for the kitchen and nothing else. Of course, that didn’t happen. I ended up buying a reusable razor, a deodorant in a refillable bottle and a tooth powder. Great buys! I have been doing some research on how I can replace our toothpaste and haven’t really made a decision yet when I chanced upon the solution at the Zero Basics booth. Please note that this is not a paid review in any way, shape or form. According to their FB post , the tooth powder is: 100% natural, handmade and effective Absolutely preservative-free, vegan, cruelty-free and has no artificial ingredients It has minerals to help strengthen your teeth Photo from Zero Basics FB page. Our honest review? We love it! It’s SUPER affordable and, of course, DOES NOT COME I...

My Switches #1: Plastic Straw

Image
Did you know that 291,241 plastic straws were collected in the 2018 International Coastal Cleanup in the Philippines? Read about it here and find out more about them in the Philippines. In the US a little over 500 MILLION straws are used EACH DAY! That’s 1 BILLION in two days and a lot of ILLIONS in a year. It won’t solve the plastic crisis. But it’s a start. I’m not going to scare you with a lot details on how bad plastic straws are to our environment but here are some just to get you curious enough to do your own research. Most plastic straws are too lightweight to make it through mechanical recycling sorter. When they make it to the ocean it breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces called micro plastics. We all know where these end up.  Plastic straw is the 11th most found ocean trash  They do not biodegrade and never fully degrade. Here’s some good news though - the simplest way to reduce plastic pollution is to REJECT the use of single-use plas...

Attempt at a Zero Waste Vacation

Image
Over the weekend my family and I stayed at a beach resort in Subic. I had every intention of not leaving anything behind and was so happy when we saw this at their restaurant during dinner after we dropped off our stuff in our room. Yehey!! They did serve everything in reusable ceramic plates, stainless steel utensils and glasses. When we ordered fresh coconut juice, they used a paper straw.  After dinner, though, we had a chance to look around our room and found some items in plastic packaging. Hopefully they are trying to use up existing stock. We ended up bringing these home so we can stuff them in ecobricks.  Here's another item on my to do list. Maybe I can convince these hotels and resorts to switch to shampoo and lotion bars and bamboo toothbrushes.

What is Zero Waste Exactly?

Image
What I thought it was. When I decided to get on board the zero waste movement I thought it was all about getting rid of ANYTHING PLASTIC.  I WAS WRONG. I thought it was to refuse anything plastic and to get rid of anything plastic at home. I, at least, got the first part right. We bought metal straws so we can refuse plastic straws. We started using our eco bags so we can refuse plastic bags at the grocery store. I felt that wasn’t enough so I looked at other ways to replace anything made of plastic at home. That’s when I found more articles about zero waste.  !Side Bar! Recommended Search Terms: zero waste, zero waste movement, zero waste diy, new to zero waste, get started zero waste, refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and rot Almost there. I found articles to help me get rid of some of the items at home and replace it with ones that don’t come in a plastic container. This is how I found the recipe for one of the zero waste products I make and promote (...

An Over Reacting Newbie

Image
When I visit a blog the first entry is typically the blogger's WHY... their purpose for putting up a blog. Who am I to go against that "tradition." I am a mom of one, a step mom of one and a partner of a man who loves the beach as much as his sons do. Recently I've decided to be an advocate for this whole Zero Waste movement and any other issues related to and associated with that. I wish I had acted on this a long time ago but only recently did I realize how my everyday choices impact our environment. A little over six months ago my boys and I went to the beach with some of our friends. It was the same beach that we go to almost every quarter but this trip was different. My little boy ended up crying. We had to cut his beach time short because the beach and the water was so dirty. Picture below isn't the actual picture but it's so close that it might as well be. I was so frustrated until I realized I was being a big fat hypocrite. I contributed to...
